Experience

Experience the Magic of Phang Nga Bay

Discover the surreal landscapes of Ao Phang Nga National Park, where sheer limestone karsts jut vertically out of the emerald-green Andaman Sea. Most famous for its starring role in the 1974 film 'The Man with the Golden Gun', James Bond Island (Khao Phing Kan) is just one highlight of this spectacular region. Your journey takes you deep into a marine wonderland of hidden lagoons ('hongs'), mysterious sea caves, and mangrove forests that can only be accessed by canoe. Beyond the natural wonders, experience the unique culture of Koh Panyee, a remarkable Muslim fishing village built entirely on stilts over the water, complete with a floating football pitch. Whether you choose a thrilling speedboat ride or a relaxing big boat cruise, a day trip to Phang Nga Bay offers an unforgettable blend of cinematic history, natural beauty, and local culture.

Planning

Historical Context

Khao Phing Kan means 'Hills Leaning Against Each Other' in Thai. The area gained international fame after the 1974 James Bond movie, transforming from a quiet fishing area to a global bucket-list destination.

Photography Tips

  • Use a polarizing filter to cut water glare
  • Wide-angle lens is best for the tall cliffs
  • Go for the early morning tour to get fewer people in your shots
  • Bring a GoPro for the canoe section

Insider Tips

  • Sit at the front of the speedboat for the best view (but a bumpy ride)
  • Buy a waterproof phone pouch before you go
  • Don't feed the monkeys at the temple—they can be aggressive
  • Try the local tea at Koh Panyee

Our Partners

  • Tours operated by top-rated local partners via Viator

Fun Facts

  • The famous needle rock, Ko Ta Pu, is about 20 meters tall.
  • The floating village of Koh Panyee has a floating football pitch inspired by the 1986 World Cup.
  • The area was originally a coral reef system millions of years ago.

Cancellation Policy

Most tours offer full refunds if cancelled at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time. Weather-related cancellations by the operator are fully refunded.

Highlight of our Thailand trip!

We booked the premium speedboat tour and it was fantastic. The canoeing at Hong Island was magical—our paddler took us into hidden lagoons we would never have found alone. Lunch at the floating village was delicious and plenty of options for my vegetarian husband.

Great scenery, but crowded

The views are exactly like the movies. Ko Ta Pu is stunning. The only downside is it gets very busy at the main island, so try to book an early bird tour if you can. The big boat option was very stable and relaxing.

Excellent value for money

We did the tour with the canoe add-on. Totally worth it. The guides were funny and kept us safe. The Monkey Cave stop was a fun bonus. Highly recommend booking online to skip the negotiation hassle at the pier.

Perfect day out

Everything was well organized from the hotel pickup to the drop-off. The limestone cliffs are breathtaking. The lunch at Panyee Island was a cultural experience in itself. Don't forget your sunscreen!

Beautiful nature

Phang Nga Bay is a must-see. The boat ride was smooth. I appreciated the cold water and fresh fruit served on board. The national park fee is extra, so bring cash.
